Undocumented; Shifter is part of a series of figures I began while living in Arizona. The racism against undocumented individuals seemed to even a newcomer as unwarranted and, I suspect, instigated by contractors to ensure wages for everyone remain competitively low as long as undocumented people were in the mix for labour jobs. Each of the three figures in the Undocumented series portray a different gesture stemming from a traditional contrapposto stance. Undocumented; Shifter's defining gesture is a subtle shifting of balance and footwork out of the contrapposto stance, as if sensing danger and is already manifesting the earliest stage of escape into a turn.
